Protecting Our Right to Harvest: The Ongoing Struggle for Recognition and Justice
At the present time we have no agreement with the Government of Canada to exercise our right to Hunt & Fish without fear of prosecution from the Crown. Although it is specifically stated in Petition 115 that we should not lose our right to Hunt & Fish and was supported by the Montreal Treaty. The Government of Canada by removing our families from the AOO & MNO has stripped us of our rights and Federal funding.
Having said that we as Indigenous People to Turtle Island have the full right to Harvest to sustain ourselves which is protected under The Montreal Treaty or Great Treaty of Peace. Additionally harvesting is protected under Petittion 115 and UNDRIP. However, currently as we are no longer recognized there is a high probability the Government of Canada will continue to terrorize our families demanding money to live peacefully on our lands. If you are a Citizen of AOKFN and you do not have Harvesting rights through other Indigenous Nations and you exercise your right to Harvest you do so at your own risk for the time being.
Rest assured we aim to fully fight for our Harvesting Rights and when we succeed all Citizens of AOKFN will be granted Full Harvesting Rights, why because Indigenous is Indigenous, there is no such thing as not “Indian enough” within our Nation.
